“I have worked for the University since September 1987 so nearly 24 years. I have found as an employer they are very flexible and understanding of a woman with family commitments.  I started as part-time term-time which fitted in with my children’s school hours and I was encouraged to let the Faculty know when I could extend my hours and they would allow me to do that – hence I’m now working full-time. Holidays are great (32 days) and there is a certain amount of flexibility to when we come into work and go home.” Netta Pickett, Faculty Quality Officer and PA to the Associate Deans

I spent five great years as a student at Birmingham City University studying Software Engineering and when I had the chance to work at the university I jumped at the chance. I love the friendly atmosphere and great people at Birmingham City University and the interesting, varied, and challenging work I have as a web developer. Chris Davies, Web Developer

“Over the years I have taught too many undergraduate and post graduate students to mention, but I am still here because I really get a kick out of teaching students law and also watching them grow in confidence as they learn new skills. At this rate, I’ll still be here when I’m 70!” Alison Turnbull, Senior Lecturer, School of Law.

“Working at BCU is a total contrast to my previous experience of 28 years as a public servant. The principal difference is that of atmosphere, there is a collective feeling of being part of one big family where everyone pulls together, looks out for each other and celebrates each other’s successes. Additionally there is a feeling of pride that I work for organisation that is well respected for its achievements, something that cannot always be said for the public sector” Martin Tunley, Lecturer in Criminal Investigation

“If you have the aspiration to create your own place in the world, then Birmingham City University is a great place to start. Having studied at the University prior to my employment, I still find my role exciting and challenging. The University has made me realise how important it is to work in a job that you enjoy. The staff are always friendly and welcoming and working for the University is a constant mix of hard work and fun.” Nisha Parmar, Recruitment Administrator

Doing my placement year at Birmingham City University has been a great way of helping ease the transition from student to an employee. The University has so much going on that it wasn’t before long that I was able to get my nails stuck into some exciting projects, and was very happy to see my own ideas and propositions being put into action. I’ve seen my skill set grow immensely thanks to the number of training courses the University put on for members of staff, and my manager has repeatedly encouraged me to take advantage of all the courses available to me, should I feel they’d help me develop my skills.  Rumandeep Gill, Marketing Assistant (Student Placement)

‘I guess over 20 years' experience in design and brand consultancy means I bring a strong professional perspective to the Master’s in Design Management, which I’ve run for a few years now. Running this postgraduate programme is demanding. It’s also a real pleasure. I get to work with ambitious designers, both recent grads and those with years of experience, from all design disciplines, and from all around the world.’ Caroline Norman, Course Director, MA Design Management and Chair, BIAD Employability Group, Birmingham Institute of Art and Design
