Environment and Sustainability
ECOCAMPUS
As a University we recognise the growing importance of
environmental and sustainability issues. We understand that, as an
educational establishment, we not only have a responsibility to educate our
staff and students on more sustainable practices but also to lead by example by
improving our own performance. One of the ways that we are doing this is
by implementing an Environmental Management System (EMS). This is
enabling us to take a more structured approach to managing our environmental
impacts.
As a University we have chosen to enrol on the EcoCampus
scheme which is a phased approach to introducing an EMS specifically designed
for the Higher Education sector. There are four phases to this scheme,
bronze (planning), silver (implementing), gold (operating) and platinum
(checking and correcting) with platinum stage being broadly equivalent to ISO
14001. In December 2011 Birmingham City University was awarded the Gold
award and we are now working towards the Platinum.
